Wednesday Debate Session - Introduction to argumentation | CBS Debating Society | onsdag, 24. januar 2018

A new semester has emerged before us! We will be resuming our weekly debate practices and welcome the new interested participants. If you are interested, all you have to do is to show up for the practice.

For the first debate session of the semester, we will introduce you to the essential components of constructing a sound argument. While argumentation is partially an art that depends on intuition and spontaneity, underlying principles exist nonetheless that can be leveraged. We will discuss how arguments can be structured, what substantive components they should preferably contain, and how to maximize their impact on the audience.

Following the presentation, we will have a debate practice in which you can put your new insights to use. We will be pairing inexperienced debaters with the experienced ones to encourage a mutual learning experience.

This is a public event, and anyone is welcome to join regardless of where you study or what level of experience you have with debating. If you want to come to try debating, judging, or just spectating, then feel free to join.

Presentation on the fundamentals of argumentation (30min)
Debate practice (80min)
Judging and feedback (30min)

If you have any questions regarding the event, ask Alexander Chen.
